Cannabis 101: A Beginner's Guide to Getting Started

So you’re cannabis-curious. Maybe a friend recommended it, maybe you’re exploring alternatives for sleep or stress, or maybe you’ve simply decided it’s time to see what all the fuss is about. Whatever brought you here, welcome — and know that you’re in the right place.

Getting started with cannabis doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With a little guidance and the right support, it can actually be a really enjoyable experience. Here’s what you need to know before your first visit.

There’s No One-Size-Fits-All

The most important thing to understand about cannabis is that it affects everyone differently. Your body chemistry, tolerance, metabolism, and even your mood that day can all influence how a product makes you feel. That’s why we never recommend copying exactly what a friend does — what works perfectly for them might be too much or too little for you.
The golden rule for beginners: start low, go slow. Choose a product with a lower dose, see how your body responds, and build from there. There’s no rush.

Know Your Formats

Cannabis comes in more forms than most beginners expect, and each one delivers a different kind of experience.

  • Flower is the most traditional form — it’s smoked or vaped and typically takes effect within minutes. It’s a good option if you want to feel the effects quickly and have more control over how much you consume.
  • Edibles — including gummies, chocolates, and beverages — are ingested and processed through your digestive system, which means they take longer to kick in (anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours). Because of this delay, beginners often make the mistake of taking more before the first dose has fully set in. Don’t. Start small and wait.
  • Tinctures are liquid drops taken under the tongue and offer a middle ground — faster onset than edibles, more discreet than smoking. They’re a popular choice for people who want precise dosing without the ritual of rolling or vaping.
  • Topicals — creams, balms, and oils applied directly to the skin — are non-intoxicating and great for localized relief without any psychoactive effects.

THC vs. CBD (The Short Version)

You’ll see these two terms everywhere. THC is the compound responsible for the “high” feeling associated with cannabis. CBD is non-intoxicating and is often used for its calming, anti-inflammatory properties. Many products contain both in varying ratios, and finding the right balance for your needs is something our budtenders love helping with.

Ask Questions — Seriously

One of the biggest differences between walking into Urbana and ordering something online is the human element. Our budtenders aren’t just there to ring you up — they’re trained to help you figure out what actually makes sense for you. Tell them what you’re hoping to feel, what you want to avoid, and any concerns you have. The more context, the better the recommendation.

There are no stupid questions here. We’ve heard them all, and we love every one of them.

The First Visit

When you come in for the first time, give yourself a little extra time. Browse, look around, take in the space. All three of our locations — Geary and Mission in San Francisco, and our award-winning Oakland spot — have consumption lounges where you can relax, ask follow-up questions, and just settle in.
Cannabis is a journey, and your first visit is just the beginning. We’re here for all of it.
